MeDe Innovation call for feasibility study proposals

MeDe Innovation call for feasibility study proposals

January 20, 2014

MeDe Innovation (the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Medical Devices) is offering funding for at least six research feasibility studies in the field of Medical Device Manufacturing.
Launched at the inaugural conference of MeDe Innovation, the Centre is looking to fund research at Technology Readiness Levels from 1 to 3 that will aid the fundamental understanding and development of innovation in medical device manufacturing.
MeDe Innovation is researches and develops advanced methods for functionally stratified design and near patient manufacturing, to enable cost effective matching of device function to the patient needs and surgical environment. This will deliver “the right product, by the right process to the right patient at the right time” to an enhanced standard of reliability and performance.
The Feasibility Studies should examine a subject area in the field, review the activity within it, identify the key challenges and research questions that are not currently being addressed and develop full proposals for funding that can be submitted to existing national and global funding sources (e.g., EPSRC, TSB, EU, industry or charities). All awards are expected to have an identified and committed industry partner and a defined clinical need. Awardees are expected to attract significant new industrial and public sector investment that will form a strategic part of the Centre activities.
Awards are limited to a maximum value of £50K at 80% FEC and projects can be for a maximum duration of 6 months in length. Short (less than six months) and small (less than £50K in total value) are also welcomed. The total costs should include directly incurred staff to work on the projects and a small budget for consumables. Funds are not available to support directly allocated staff. Applications can only be submitted by academic and postdoctoral research staff at UK universities and associated research institutions.
