Pre-clinical Wear Simulation: Knee testing capabilities

Capability Description

iMBE has extensive pre-clinical wear simulation facilities with in excess of 80 stations for studying tribology of hip, knee and spine arthroplasty bearing materials and cartilage repair interventions. At Leeds we can test to – and beyond – the ISO standard. Our capabilities have been developed to study malalignment such as femoral condylar lift off, and can also test under different kinematic conditions. Two simulators are capable of running studies under a high flexion gait cycle (up to 125°). The simulators can also be run under force or displacement control depending on the research question. Tests have also investigated the effect of setup of the components.

Case Study

Our researchers provided DePuy with independent expertise and product verification testing on the company’s Sigma ® CR150 total knee femoral component. Developing innovative products such as the Sigma ® CR150 requires testing beyond industry standards – making Leeds and ideal parter.  DePuy accessed expertise and independently verified data on the design. iMBE’s track record also meant DePuy could benchmark their product against a wealth of data.
