Ask the Expert: Clinically-led manufacture of custom-made collagen membranes

Tuesday 30th October 2018, 10:00 – 15.30
Seminar room, 4th Floor, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Turner Street, Whitechapel, London, E1 2AD
This event will highlight key performance requirements and future needs for the scalable manufacture of next-generation collagen-based biomaterials from the perspective of both an orthopaedic and a periodontal surgeon, together with a medical device manufacturer specialising in bone and cartilage regeneration.
Collagen-based membranes are important for replacement or reinforcement of connective tissues, and as occlusive barriers in Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) and Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR). Application areas include periodontal, maxillofacial and orthopaedic surgery, where the biocompatibility, degradability and versatility of collagen-based membranes are highly prized. As clinical procedures continue to advance in various fields of surgery, new functional demands are being placed on the specifications of collagen-based membranes with regard to properties such as long-term stability, mechanical properties, adhesion and the ability to control biofilm infection. New manufacturing techniques based on hydrogels, fibres and nonwovens are also in development providing new physical formats and routes to customisation.
This workshop will give an overview of clinical needs, methods of manufacture and performance requirements, with the opportunity for attendees to discuss requirements and challenges with clinical specialists, engineers and product manufacturers.
